5 Most Romantic Things to Do in Belize

03Feb

1. FEED EACH OTHER THE FOOD OF THE GODS

The Mayans believed that chocolate held intense, mystical powers and was associated with the great gods that ruled their culture. And who can blame them? I mean, it’s probably not far from the truth. Chocolate still holds the allure of decadence, romance, and for some serious chocolate lovers a bit of ecstasy. Belize is home to dozens of small cacao farms, where the fruit that is the source of all chocolate is still grown in the traditional organic Mayan way. The best and freshest of all chocolates can be found here at family businesses like Belize Chocolate Company and Ajaw Chocolate, where the chocolate is made by hand with craftsmanship that is still fit for the gods.

2. JUMP INTO A WATERFALL TOGETHER

Is there any image more romantic than you and your favorite person frolicking in a fresh, clear waterfall? How about something a bit more thrilling? A bit more shocking? A bit more adventurous? Don’t just swim in that waterfall together–jump off it hand in hand. Western and southern Belize are peppered with waterfalls off all sizes and intensities. From tiny babbling falls spilling over limestone smoothed by the millennia to gushing behemoths barreling like a freight train into valleys one thousand feet below. And while we wouldn’t recommend taking the plunge off the latter, there are some stunning spots for just this thing throughout Belize. Make the leap at tons of gorgeous locations, like The Showers in Cristo Rey Village (pictured here), or from the big rock at Big Rock Falls. The possibilities for the most exciting type of romance abound!

3. INDULGE IN A PRIVATE CANDLELIGHT DINNER

It has long been held that food is the way to a person’s heart. Add private table service, loads of candles and flowers, and a backdrop that makes you feel as if you’re in a screensaver, and you have the perfect recipe for romance. Whether you’re indulging on the coast, cayes, or the jungles of Belize (pictured here at Table Rock Jungle Lodge), a private dinner will make even the hardest-hearted of us swoon.

4. RELAX WITH A COUPLE’S MASSAGE

Not much needs to be said here. I mean, seriously, experiencing the pleasure of a deep tissue massage in the beauty of Belize side-by-side with your love. . . well, it kind of speaks for itself. In-room and spa massage for couples is available at most well-appointed lodges and resorts throughout the  country.

5. SAY “I DO” IN THE RAINFOREST

Destinations weddings continue to grow in popularity, and the romance that surrounds tying the knot in exotic locations such as Belize adds to their allure for both the couple getting married and the family and friends who come to witness their union. With the second largest barrier reef in the world, Mayan temples, and dense jungles, there is a location that is perfect for almost everyone. Whether you plan your wedding through a professional wedding consultant, like Signature Belize Weddings, or the resort you’re staying at, like Table Rock Jungle Lodge, you’re certain to begin your new life together in a setting you will never forget.

HORSEBACK RIDING

CHOOSE FROM THESE THREE GREAT RIDES:

Horseback Ride to Xunantunich Ruins

The tour begins at Hanna Stables, a family-owned horseback riding establishment where over 45 horses call home. When you arrive, meet your local Belizean guide for the day and then mount your horses to depart. The ride to Xunantunich includes a well-maintained trail through a large private farm and along the banks of the Mopan River in the village of San Jose Succotz.  You will cross the river on a hand-cranked ferry, and then ride your horse up to Xunantunich. When you arrive, prepare to dismount and let your horse rest while you explore Xunantunich by foot for as long as you desire. Afterward, you’ll will ride back to the farm where we will enjoy a delicious lunch of traditional Belizean dishes featuring ingredients grown on the San Lorenzo organic farm.

JUNGLE INFINITY POOL NOW OPEN!

01May

Don’t miss out on enjoying the bliss that is our new Jungle Infinity Pool. Tucked into the soaring trees of the surrounding jungle and built into the face of a hill overlooking the Macal River Valley, this newest addition to Table Rock doesn’t disappoint. After years of dreaming and six months of intense construction, the pool not only gives our guests a gorgeous view and a fabulous spot to beat the heat, but it also provides more beautiful open-air spaces to relax, unwind, and rediscover themselves.

How did we do it? Well, it all started with building a new road on the property so that we could reach the spot where we knew the pool would be perfect. A couple of weeks and a large excavator later, and voila!–new road. Then we began the slow and painstaking process of working with the natural contours of the land to best fit the pool to the environment. Nobody likes skimming the pool, but we love our trees at Table Rock and we didn’t want to loose the feeling of the surrounding forest, so only a bare minimum of trees were removed during the building.

Then came the addition of bathrooms, an outdoor shower, a great pool deck with loads of seating, a breezy pavilion filled with comfy sofas and ceiling fans overlooking it all, and finally a bridge for access to and from the dining room and bar. All of this and Wifi access to boot! You’ll never want to move from this fabulous new space! Your holiday time with us is limited, though, so be sure to make time to enjoy the pool as well as all our other onsite activities and our amazing guided excursions, too!

Guided Canoeing To San Ignacio

GUIDED CANOEING TO SAN IGNACIO

Learn about the riverine flora and fauna on the pristine Macal River with this two-hour guided canoe trip from Table Rock to San Ignacio Town. Your naturalist guide will meet you at our canoe landing and paddle you along the river, pointing out such sights as sleeping vampire bats, kingfishers, spiny bamboo, huge green iguanas, and – if you’re lucky – maybe even neotropical river otters. The peace of the Macal River is uninterrupted by power boats or jet skis and it’s unusual to run into many other people on its calm and tranquil waters. Once you get to town, you can either come directly back to the lodge or take a couple of hours to explore downtown San Ignacio on your own. Big Rock Falls

23Sep

BIG ROCK FALLS

Part of the Vaca Plateau in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, Big Rock Falls is an impressive 60-foot waterfall boasting two large, deep emerald pools filled with spring water perfect for swimming or, for the more adventurous, cliff jumping.  The water from the peaks of the Maya Mountains rushes over giant granite rock outcroppings and down the waterfall.  The footpath to the falls is a 15-minute hike and involves some moderately challenging climbing down hand hewn stairs to the valley below.  Once to the water, you must walk over the large slabs of not-so-flat and sometimes slippery granite to reach the falls.  This site is amazing, but only for those who are in moderate physical condition.  This site can be substituted with Rio On Pools.

Drive Time from Table Rock: 45 minutes on unpaved roads

Adventure Level: Moderate to Strenuous.  The drive is 13 miles on unpaved roads and the hike down to the falls can leave even the fittest traveler’s legs a bit sore the next day.

What to Wear & Bring: Bathing suit under shorts and shirt, and water shoes. Remember your towel and a change of clothes. You may also want to bring along extra water, sunscreen, and insect repellent for the hike.

*Restrictions: Basic swimming skills are recommended for this site

Duration: 1 to 2 hours

Combinations: Available only as a full day combo tour with Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, Caracol, or Xunantunich.

  • Includes licensed guide, transportation to and from the lodge, gear, and entry fees. When booked as a full-day combo tour, it also includes lunch.
  • Minimum two persons
  • A 50% cancellation fee applies to any tours booked and then cancelled by the guest less than 24 hours in advance
  • Please add 12.5% sales tax

Rio On Pools

23Sep

RIO ON POOLS

As the cool, pure water of the Rio On River runs over a moonscape of dark granite, it creates dozens of small pools and waterfalls that visitors relish swimming in. The smooth and comfortable surfaces of the water-worn rock just beg to be sunbathed upon, and jumping from boulder to boulder like the proverbial billy goat is often a favorite activity here. There are a long series of cement steps down to the lower pools and a fairly easy to navigate and well-worn foot path through sand and stone to the upper pools.

Drive Time from Table Rock: 50 minutes

Adventure Level: Easy to Moderate. Anyone can view this spectacle of nature and take photos of the site, no matter what your level of fitness. To access the pools and falls for swimming, however, you must either descend many stairs (and then ascend them back up) or take on a short hike via the foot path. Increase your Adventure Level by jumping from boulder to boulder to get to farther pools and falls.

What to Wear & Bring: Bathing suit under shorts or lightweight long pants, shirt, and water shoes. Remember your towel and a change of clothes. Extra water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent are also great to bring along.

*Restrictions: None.

Duration: This site is available only as part one the full day tours listed below.

Combinations: This tour is offered as a full day tour in conjunction with Caracol, Mountain Pine Ridge, Xunantunich, Barton Creek, or Chechem Ha.

  • Includes licensed guide, transportation to and from the lodge, lunch as part of the full day tour, and entry fees.
  • Minimum two persons
  • A 50% cancellation fee applies to any tours booked and then cancelled by the guest less than 24 hours in advance
