Yaxhá

YAXHÁ

Yaxhá is an amazing “freshly prepped” Mayan site just across the border from Belize in Guatemala. Restoration is newly complete – but still ongoing. The only thing it lacks are crowds! The architecture of this site will astound you. There are several opportunities to climb to the top of a temple and look down on other temples and to see how this city was built adjacent to nearby natural lakes. This park is also a great place to find wildlife, and an even greater place to witness how strangler figs do their magic to take over a space in the forest.

Drive Time from Table Rock: 2 hours, on paved highway and unpaved access roads

Adventure Level: Moderate.  This tour starts early and involves loads of walking.  For those who want to take the challenge up a notch, be sure to climb to the tops of the temple ruins.

What to Wear & Bring: Shorts or lightweight long pants, shirt, and comfortable walking shoes. Valid passport required. If you do not hold a passport from the USA, UK, or Canada, please check Guatemalan visa requirements. Don’t forget your US$20/BZ$40 per person to pay your border crossing fee. Extra water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent are also recommended.

*Restrictions: This tour is not for those who suffer from car-sickness. Be sure to check the visa requirements to enter Guatemala if you do not hold a valid US, UK, or Canadian passport.

Duration: Full-day tour.

  • May be joined with guests from other establishments

Chechem Ha Cave

CHECHEM HA CAVE

Located beyond the towns of Cayo and high into the lush primary growth jungle of the Vaca Plateau is Chechem Ha Cave (“Cave of the Poisonwood Tree”).  Discovered by the local land owners and their hunting dog a number of years ago, this cave is a sacred Maya burial site containing artifacts that date back two millennia.  A variety of ancient pots and a carved stela used for ceremonial purposes can be viewed up close, and visitors are surprised by the final chamber of the cave which opens into a cathedral-like cavern where Mayan ceremonies were once held.  This cave rivals ATM, but without the water element, and is typically used as a substitute for ATM when it is closed.

Drive Time from Table Rock: 1 hour

Adventure Level: Strenuous.  To examine some of the pottery you’ll have to climb ladders and hold onto ropes, and getting to the cave entrance requires a scenic, yet mildly challenging, 35-minute hike through the jungle.

What to Wear & Bring: Shorts or lightweight long pants, shirt, and comfortable walking or hiking shoes. You should also bring along extra water, sunscreen, and insect repellent for the hike.

*Restrictions: Adventurers must be in at least moderate physical condition to enjoy this excursion

Duration: Half-day tour

Combinations: Make this adventure a full day by combining it with Xunantunich.

  • Includes licensed guide, transportation to and from the lodge, gear, and entry fees. When booked as a full-day combo tour, it also includes lunch.
  • Minimum two persons

CAHAL PECH

One of the oldest Maya sites in Belize, Cahal Pech (“Place of Ticks”) was once a robust city with a population of 10,000-15,000 people. During its heyday between 1200 B.C – 900 A.D. Cahal Pech was a one of the most important centers in the Belize River Valley Region. Located in the heart of San Ignacio, this is one of the easiest ruins to reach and also one of the most comfortable, with large shady trees providing a nice respite from the Belizean sun.

Xunantunich

XUNANTUNICH

You can ask to work the hand-cranked ferry yourself as your ride across the Mopan River near the village of San Jose Succotz toward the archeological site of Xunantunich (pronounced “shoo-NAN-too-NICH”). Meaning “Stone Maiden” in Maya, this site from the Classic Period is relatively small and very easy to move around.  El Castillo, the massive 120-foot-high main temple, was built on a leveled hilltop and has a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Mopan River Valley looking across Belize’s Cayo District and into Guatemala.  On the eastern wall of El Castillo is a reproduction of one of the finest Mayan carvings in Belize—a frieze decorated with jaguar heads, human faces, and abstract geometric patterns telling the story of the Moon’s affair with Morning Light.

Drive Time from Table Rock: 25 minutes

Adventure Level: Easy.  This adventure has a short drive via paved highway.  The ruins are built on a flat area and encompass only a small area, so it’s easy to get around the entire site.  To increase the Adventure Level of this trip, try climbing to the top of El Castillo.

What to Wear & Bring: Shorts or lightweight long pants, shirt, and comfortable walking shoes. Extra water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent are also great to bring along.

*Restrictions: None.

Duration: Half-day tour.

Combinations: Make it a full-day tour by combining this tour with Cahal Pech, Barton Creek Cave Canoeing, Cave Tubing, Big Rock Falls, Rio On Pools, or Chechem Ha Cave.

  • Includes licensed guide, transportation to and from the lodge, and entry fees. Does NOT include lunch unless combined with one of the above tours.
  • Minimum two persons
  • A 50% cancellation fee applies to any tours booked and then cancelled by the guest less than 24 hours in advance
